Engaging the Next Generation: AI, Career Paths, and the Future of Financial Planning
First Light Wealth Advisors recently had the opportunity to spend time with students at William Paterson University as part of a Financial Well-Being Student Club event. It was an engaging session that highlighted both the excitement and uncertainty many students feel when considering a career in financial services.
Our Managing Partner, Jay Korzik, led a discussion on the growing role of artificial intelligence in financial planning. While AI continues to enhance efficiency and data analysis, the conversation reinforced an important point: the human element of financial advice remains essential. Technology may change how advisors work, but it does not replace the need for trust, judgment, and meaningful client relationships.
Equally impactful was the broader discussion around career paths within the industry—particularly within the independent Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) space. Many students are familiar with large, well-known financial institutions, but fewer are aware of the opportunities available within independent firms like First Light Wealth Advisors.
The RIA model continues to gain momentum, driven by a client-first approach and an entrepreneurial mindset. As these firms grow, so does the demand for talented, motivated individuals across a range of roles—not just financial planning, but also operations, client service, technology, and marketing.
One theme that resonated strongly throughout the session was how careers in this industry are often built. Unlike more traditional paths, many opportunities in the RIA space are not widely advertised. Instead, they are created through conversations, relationships, and timing. For students, this can make the path forward feel less defined—but also full of potential for those willing to take a proactive approach.
This reality underscores the importance of early engagement. Students who begin exploring the industry, asking questions, and building connections before graduation are often better positioned to uncover opportunities and shape their career trajectory.
We were encouraged by the level of curiosity and thoughtful questions from the students in attendance. Their interest in understanding both the impact of emerging technology and the realities of entering the profession speaks to a strong and promising next generation.
At First Light Wealth Advisors, we believe that supporting the development of future professionals is critical to the continued growth and evolution of our industry. Events like this provide a valuable opportunity to share insights, demystify career paths, and help students better understand where they may fit within the financial planning profession.
We appreciate the opportunity to be part of the conversation and look forward to continuing to engage with the next generation of advisors.
